Description Speleology

The Area around Lyon offers opportunities to visit various caves such as St Aupre and Curée caves or Dent de Crolles (Chartreuse mountain range).

Vercors is well provided with caves:

Gournier mix of Caving and Canyoning
Eymards or Sainte Glaces, mostly abseiling down big verticals
Cuves de Sassenage, an underground river
Grotte Roche with an interesting fossils gallery

In the southern part of the Jura (East Lyon), a Karst platform offers a lot of beautiful underground streams network, a lot of routes divided between fossils gallery, abseiling down and lake. Guided by your instructor from our team for an introduction to the underground world.

How to dress up for caving?

Get warm clothes at the risk to freeze, especially in summer when the temp is quitte cold and wet underground contrasting with the outside.

What caves are suitable for kids?

We recommend an easy half-day route like Grotte Roche cave in the Vercors, Grotte du Curé or Saint Aupre in Chartreuse range. We wrote a file dedicated to kids and caving, have a eye!

Caving near Lyon

From Lyon, you will need to reach the surrounding mountain ranges to enjoy beautiful underground explorations.

The closest cave to Lyon, just 1 hour away, is the Cuves de Sassenage cave. You will also find other choices for caving in the Vercors region.

The second nearby mountain range from Lyon is the Chartreuse massif, less frequented than the Vercors: caving in Chartreuse.

Finally, from Lyon, you can join one of our speleology routes in Ain.

Great experience with my 2 children for a first caving outing at Roche Cave with Jean-Baptiste. Besides this very exotic and slightly sporty moment underground, Jean-Baptiste taught us many interesting things about this underground world. This motivated us for other outings of this kind, we will try canyoning another time. I highly recommend it and thanks again to our really nice guide.

We had a great day (visited the Gournier cave and went on a water walk) with a fantastic and very friendly guide (Thomas). His professionalism, good mood, and experience greatly contributed to the success of the day. I highly recommend this outing!
