At the foot of the Presles cliffs, in a magnificent rocky circus near the Choranches tourist caves is the Gournier cave, where one of the most beautiful underground rivers in Europe flows.
Incredible underground route, composed of a very beautiful fossil gallery, then a canyon travelling down to an underground river. This day trip will leave you a long lasting memory.
A 40-meter lake with crystal clear waters occupies the entrance of the cave, so we need to use inflatable boat to cross. At the end of the lake, a short climb leads us to a ledge traversed by a handrail of around 35 m, then we reach the large fossil gallery. This sophisticated gallery is 900 m long, and very concretionary : stalagmites, stalactites, drapery and gours.
After 1.5 hours, the gallery leads us to the first access to the underground river where we call "dining room", a picnic break is welcome.
For those who wish: a descent of 10 meters through large blocks with passages to "4 legs", allows us to reach the underground river. This first part from the entrance lake is an excellent introduction to the discovery of the underground world.
Then, for the more sportive and less cold : we put on neoprene wetsuits to cross the river, where the water is 7 degrees, but it always clear during our progress. The path in the river is like a canyon which can be decorated with a few "splashes" in immersion!
Attention, the aquatic part is far from the exit, it is obvious that the jumps and slides will be consciously small and not mandatory, to avoid any risk of accidents, which can be problematic in the cave.
The return will be made again by the large gallery with some variants compared to the way of coming. The course of the Gournier cave is therefore not the same as Eymards cave where has abseiling or climbing on a rope, but is rather a horizontal exploration back and forth with a rare aquatic part.
This hours caving day will end with a last possible jump for those who are comfortable to do in the entrance lake in order to swim with the light of day and the heat of the sun!See more
