Bastille Via ferrata - part 1 and 2

Description Bastille via ferrata

Good news, The reopening of the Bastille via ferrata started from May 2019 which was partially closed for 1 year, thank you to the city of Grenoble!

The Prise de la Bastille via ferrata is probably the most urban-orientated via ferrata but it is still original. One of its main advantages is accessibility : in just 5 minutes on foot from Grenoble train station or from the city center, you can reach the start of this via ferrata.

It compose of 2 parts :

  • The first part is the easiest with various actions : climb the vertical, then a long rock cirque of beams, monkey bridge and a large Nepalese bridge!
  • The second part, is wilder but yet interesting! At the common departure point, there are several choices: either a physical version for those who want to force a little, or an easy version. These two versions come together for the same final goal : climbing of the walls of the fort de la Bastille.

From the top of the via ferrata, in 5 minutes walk, you can reach the top of the Fort de la bastille with its view of Grenoble and can enjoy a drink on the Panormaic Terrace. The descent can be done either on foot or by the Bastille cable car.

To uphold the theme of doing activity without a car in Grenoble, we recommend that you can link it to the Furon canyon lower part, which is accessible by public transport!

No, there are several versions in the second part. Only the beginning (the first 15 meters) of the second part is quite hard, but the guide provides you good assistance with climbing rope to pass through. For the rest of the route, we can continue on the easy version on the left or harder one on the right depending on your level.

No, The end of the via ferrata is 50m downhill from the Bastille. It takes 5 minutes walk to reach the cable car station.

99% of the people we take are beginners, and they always do well. However if you want an easier one to start, you can choose the via ferratas of Saint Vincent de Mercuze or Roc de Cornillon
